This was my second time mixing for Neil, who, for the record, is hard-working, devoted to his craft, and a true gentleman in every way. Watching him work and write and perform was inspirational. Following his “12 Songs” album, for which I mixed a full-length Artist’s Cut bonus disc, producer Rick Rubin asked if I would also mix Neil’s new album, “Home Before Dark.” I asked Rick if he had a studio preference and he replied, “wherever you mixed the 12 Songs bonus material.” Little did he know or mind that was mixed at my home studio, all “in the box” in Pro Tools, in a tiny extra bedroom. These days I have a larger, more comfortable workspace, but it’s amazing what’s technologically possible at home. I have sole mix credit on this album, though it should be noted that a song or two were actually mixed by my dear friend Andrew Scheps. Thanks, Andrew!
