Role:
ENGINEER / MIXER / MUSICIAN
I remember days before beginning my 2-year journey with The Avett Brothers a phone conversation with the band’s Front Of House engineer, Justin Glanville, who predicted, “You will love these guys. Everyone in the band is so cool and so nice to work with. It’s like a family. You’re going to have a blast.”
“Great!” I replied, yet the cynic in me was like, “… riiight. Heard that before. We’ll see….”
Justin was right though. The Avetts are an incredibly welcoming, loving, hilarious, good-times, family. What a blast it was working on this album!
The initial tracking took place over a few weeks at Rick Rubin’s Shangri-LA studio in Malibu, CA. We recorded everyone at the same time, including strings, with everyone in the same room together (except for Mike’s drums, which were in the tiny vocal booth for isolation — sorry, Mike!). Later, we added overdubs at Fidelitorium in Kernersville, NC; and Avatar in New York, NY. Studio wizard and dear friend Jason Lader provided chunky beats and remix elements to a handful of songs. I added a few subtle programming bits and keyboard parts during mixing, such as the harmonium on “Fisher Road To Hollywood.” Mixing took place at my own Little People Studio in Los Angeles, CA.
